What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a type of tooth restoration made up of a post, an abutment, and a crown. Together, these parts replicate the appearance and function of natural teeth. Dental implants are a popular tooth replacement option because they blend in with your other teeth and can last for the rest of your life with proper care.

The process of getting a dental implant will involve your oral surgeon and your general dentist. Your surgeon will insert the implant, and your dentist will create and place your final dental crown.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental professionals recommend dental implants to replace missing teeth because they offer numerous advantages over other types of tooth restoration:
1

Many Patients Qualify

With advancements in bone grafting treatment, we can help more patients qualify for dental implants even if gum or bone loss has occurred.
2

Protect Oral Health

Dental implants stimulate the jaw bone, which keeps the jaw healthy and strong. Implants also prevent existing teeth from shifting out of place.
3

Incredible Results

Because of their custom designs, your implants will look natural in your mouth and help you regain confidence in your smile.
4

Fully Functional

Once the implant sites have healed, you can eat your favorite foods with durable new teeth that stay in place.

Types of Dental Implants

Whether you need to replace a single tooth or your entire smile, our oral surgeons can determine the right type of dental implants for your health and budget. At Arizona Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, we offer many types of dental implant treatments, including:

  • Single Implants. We will use one dental implant to replace one missing tooth.
  • Immediate Implants. After having a tooth extracted, we can place the dental implant at the same visit. This reduces your overall treatment time and saves you money.
  • Multiple Teeth Replacement. Dental implant bridges or multiple individual implants are great options if you need to restore multiple teeth. Implant-supported bridges are self-sufficient and do not rely on other teeth for support, unlike traditional bridges.
  • Full-Arch Restoration. Using several implants to support a fixed prosthesis, we can transform your entire smile in just one surgical visit with the Straumann® Pro Arch system.

By using our unique 1-2-3 implant placement methodology, we significantly reduce the time required to complete implant-based restoration.

Dental Implant Procedure

When you meet with one of our surgeons at the consultation, we will evaluate your oral health and outline the details of your treatment. We will take 3D scans of your mouth and discuss your anesthesia options to ensure a comfortable and safe surgical experience. IV sedation is most often used for dental implant placement, but we may also use local anesthesia for added comfort.

First, we will administer the anesthesia. Once you are comfortable, your surgeon will make an incision in the gum tissue and insert the implant post. Sutures are placed as needed, and you will rest in our office until we feel you are ready to go home. For same-day dental implants, we will numb the area, extract the tooth, and immediately insert the implant post.

Our team will provide post-operative instructions for you to follow after your surgery. Following these guidelines closely will contribute to a higher success rate for your dental implant and expedite recovery. If you ever have any questions, contact our Sahuarita office and we will be happy to help.

How Much Do Dental Implants Cost?

During your first visit, we will provide you with a cost estimate for your dental implant treatment. This cost is different for everyone and will reflect your specific oral health needs. Factors such as the number of implants you need, your choice of anesthesia, your dental or medical insurance, and the complexity of your surgery will determine the total cost. Our practice accepts many payment methods and financing options to help you afford the care you need. Contact our office in Sahuarita, AZ, today to receive a cost estimate for your dental implants.

Denture Replacement With Dental Implants

Our oral surgeons offer the Straumann Pro Arch system for full-arch restoration cases. This treatment involves using several dental implant posts to secure a fixed denture, completely restoring the appearance and function of your entire smile. While traditional dentures rest on the bony ridge in the mouth, implant-supported dentures become a fixed part of your smile, preventing bone loss and facial sagging.

Removable dentures are an option for replacing the appearance of missing teeth, but many patients who wear dentures find them uncomfortable and embarrassing. With an implant-supported denture, you can enjoy your favorite foods and maintain regular oral hygiene without removable parts or oral sores. Contact our office today if you wear dentures or bridges and seek a more comfortable, long-term solution.

Types of Anesthesia

We offer a variety of anesthesia choices to ensure a comfortable oral surgery experience.

"I came to Arizona Oral Surgeons for an implant and extraction of a dead tooth. I really was extremely nervous. I thought, I don’t know how this is going to work out, but they were very kind, and the next thing I knew, I was waking up with the implant in my mouth and my tooth gone. My recovery time was much better than I had expected. Dr. Coles was very friendly. He seemed extremely professional, and he definitely did the job, and I was very, very happy with him. If I had a friend in Tucson, and that friend needed oral surgery, I would definitely recommend Arizona Oral Surgeons."

"I came to AZOMS to have a tooth extraction and a dental implant. I was very nervous. I really wasn’t sure what I was in for until Dr. Coles explained everything from the beginning to the end of what was going to be happening. Dr. Coles has such a wonderful bedside/chairside manner that I felt that I was in very good hands. My dental implant feels so natural that, yes, I cannot even feel which side it is on. I would recommend my friends to see Dr. Coles because of the excellent care that I received."

"I was referred by my primary dentist when I had an old bridge break at the gum line, and so knew it had to be extracted and an implant done. Very warm welcoming; greeted very professionally. Dr. Coles was very calm, collected, explained everything, put everyone at ease. The staff is phenomenal — they are great. They always greet you by name; they greet you with a smile. They make sure that scheduling is per your schedule — they'll make adjustments. They're very pleasant on the phone. I get reminders. They're excellent to work with. I've told numerous people, "Don't go anywhere else. Come and see Dr. Coles.""

"One of my teeth fell out — front — and I needed to have an implant. I went to see Dr. Coles. He was very personable, very nice. When I knew I had to have surgery, yes, I was nervous, but really, it was fine — no problems — and he reassured me that everything was okay. It was nice. I was very comfortable. Overall, I would not go any place else, and I have already recommended AZOMS to other people because I don't think you can get this kind of care. I really do trust Dr. Wood and Dr. Coles. I would not go to anybody else; they're both great."

Alicia Reviews Her Dental Implants Procedure Watch Review

"Well, my sister got her wisdom teeth out — extracted — first, and so when my sister's wisdom teeth extraction was so good (she had a great experience) that we just had to come back for my wisdom teeth extraction as well. I wasn't really nervous because I saw how great the recovery that my sister had was. The doctor was talking to me — I had met Dr. Wood before so I knew who he was — so that made it a lot calmer to me. The procedure itself — it went really smoothly, and I just remember waking up and just knowing they were taking care of me. My recovery went really well. I just made sure to lay low and for about three or four days, I was eating really soft foods. Within a week or two later, I was eating regular foods. Dr. Wood was really nice. He's really funny too, and he just knows how to calm you down. He's really friendly. The staff was really welcoming to me as I came in. They always make sure that you're comfortable in your situations. One of my favorite things that they did was Dr. Wood called the night after to see how they were doing and to check up on them, on the recovery. And so it's really just a welcoming place to come, and I think that the recovery went really well."

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a dental implant with gum disease?

You must have healthy gums to receive dental implants. Gum disease weakens the gum tissue and surrounding bone, making it difficult to support an implant. If you have periodontal disease, you should treat it prior to receiving a dental implant.

What are the two main types of dental implants?

The two main types of dental implants used today are endosteal and subperiosteal implants. Endosteal implants are the most common type. For these implants, your surgeon will surgically insert the implant into the jaw bone. Subperiosteal implants are placed on top of the bone beneath the gum instead of being inserted into the bone. These implants rely on metal framework for support and are less common than endosteal implants.

How long does a tooth implant last?

If you brush and floss your implant regularly, it has the potential to last a lifetime. If the crown becomes damaged or worn, it may require replacement, but the post itself should serve you for many years.

How long does dental implant surgery take?

Our oral surgeons, on average, can place a single implant in 30 to 60 minutes. Multiple implant or full-arch restoration procedures can take between 1 and 3 hours.
