Dental Implant Procedure

When you meet with one of our surgeons at the consultation, we will evaluate your oral health and outline the details of your treatment. We will take 3D scans of your mouth and discuss your anesthesia options to ensure a comfortable and safe surgical experience. IV sedation is most often used for dental implant placement, but we may also use local anesthesia for added comfort.

First, we will administer the anesthesia. Once you are comfortable, your surgeon will make an incision in the gum tissue and insert the implant post. Sutures are placed as needed, and you will rest in our office until we feel you are ready to go home. For same-day dental implants, we will numb the area, extract the tooth, and immediately insert the implant post.

Our team will provide post-operative instructions for you to follow after your surgery. Local Anesthesia

Local anesthesia is used in most oral surgery procedures, sometimes in conjunction with other forms of anesthesia. It numbs the surgical area to prevent pain. If you use local anesthesia alone, you will remain conscious throughout the procedure but not feel discomfort.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is used with a local anesthetic to help you relax. You inhale nitrous oxide through a mask, and it has a mild pain-controlling effect. It wears off as soon as the mask is removed and you can drive yourself home afterward.

Intravenous (IV) Sedation

IV anesthesia puts you into a sleep-like state. You will be able to answer questions asked by your surgeon, but will have no awareness of the procedure and likely not remember it once the sedation wears off. You will need a designated driver to take you home.

General Anesthesia

General anesthesia is used for extensive jaw and facial surgeries or for patients with medical issues who are not candidates for in-office IV anesthesia. An anesthesiologist will assist with these surgeries. Some patients can be driven home the same day as the procedure, but other cases require an overnight stay.

Can I get a dental implant with gum disease?

You must have healthy gums to receive dental implants. Gum disease weakens the gum tissue and surrounding bone, making it difficult to support an implant. If you have periodontal disease, you should treat it prior to receiving a dental implant.

What are the two main types of dental implants?

The two main types of dental implants used today are endosteal and subperiosteal implants. Endosteal implants are the most common type.
